Chip’s Coaching

What people I’ve worked with say

“I’d tried a few times in the past to write narrative profiles. But generally failed. Chip helped me get over that, working with me on a long narrative profile for the first time, and making it a less intimidating endeavour. I would never have been able to do it without his coaching.“

Lois Kapila, Co-Founder, Managing Editor, Dublin (Ireland) Inquirer

Shortlisted, The Orwell Prize, European Journalist of the Year, 2019

“I have learned more about writing and editing from Chip Scanlan than from anyone else I’ve worked with in 25 years of journalism and storytelling.“

Julie Moos, Executive director, National Press Club Institute

“Chip Scanlan’s experience as a writer and a reader of work in progress informs his gifts as a writing coach. His incisive critique of my memoir refined the drafts and kept me going.“

Trevor R. Brown, Professor, Dean Emeritus, School of Journalism, Indiana University

WHAT I CAN DO TO HELP YOU

Consultations

Are you stuck on a story? Trying to get one off the ground or make your draft better?

Let’s talk about it. I provide a FREE 30-minute consultation. Email me at chipscan@gmail.com to set one up.

If you find our conversation helpful, we can always set up another meeting to discuss your work or a particular story in more detail. $125 an hour.

Manuscript Coaching

This is where we get into the nitty-gritty, working together on stories in progress.

First, how I work. I don’t fix stories. I coach writers, offering constructive and encouraging feedback. My method: A “movie of my reading,” described here.

Need help on deadline?

I provide same-day coaching, providing feedback with two revisions to make your story the best it can be in the time you have. $125 per story.

Working on a longer piece?

I provide feedback on a first draft and three revisions for narrative, magazine or investigative pieces, plus a phone or Zoom call to bring our work to a satisfactory close.
$600 per story.

So you’re working on a book?

I can provide coaching on your manuscript.
$650 per chapter. That includes six hours of phone/Zoom coaching, manuscript review and multiple revisions. My fee is adjustable depending on the length of the chapters and additional coaching.
